Have Fun in the Sun . . . But Don’t Get Burned!

Summertime means longer days, vacation and travel time, pool parties, barbecues, and outdoor activities. Soaking up the summer sunshine makes us feel great, and getting a healthy-looking tan makes us look great, too.

Unfortunately for us sun-worshippers, the sun’s UV rays can cause sunburns, skin cancer, and premature aging. Here’s how to enjoy the summer weather, and get that sun-kissed look, while still protecting your skin.

Sunscreen, your skin’s best ally

SPF means Sun Protection Factor. The number indicates how much longer than normal you can stay in the sun, without burning. SPF ranges from 2 to 60+. The higher the SPF number, the more protection you have against sunburn and UV damage. For example, if you normally burn after 15 minutes of sun exposure, using a sunscreen with SPF 10 will allow you to stay in the sun 10 times longer without burning, or 150 minutes. Dermatologists recommend daily use of a sunscreen with at least SPF 15. If you have fair skin, sunburn easily, or will have a lot of intense sun exposure, choose a higher SPF.

If you will be swimming or doing water sports, make sure to choose a sunscreen that is waterproof or water resistant. Waterproof sunscreens will protect your skin for 80 minutes in the water. Water resistant sunscreens will protect your skin for 40 minutes in the water.

Apply sunscreen to all areas of your body that will be exposed to the sun. For the best protection, apply sunscreen 20 – 30 minutes before sun exposure, and re-apply again 20 – 30 minutes after you’ve been in the sun. Always re-apply sunscreen after swimming, sweating, and toweling off.

Protect and moisturize your skin at the same time

Look for a daytime moisturizer that also contains sunscreen. This is a great way to add sun protection to your daily skincare routine. It’s one less step to worry about, plus you won’t have another layer of product to potentially clog your pores. Your skin will thank you!

You’ve got it made in the shade

Avoid direct sun exposure during the hottest part of the day, from 11 am to 2 pm. Protect yourself with a wide-brimmed sun hat. You will still need sunscreen at this time, because the sun reflects off of other surfaces.

Get that sun-kissed look, naturally and safely

Want to get the healthy radiant look of tanned skin, but without getting burned? Get a tan effortlessly, without the sun damage. Try a bronzer (self-tanning lotion) that actually nourishes and hydrates your skin with vital nutrients. Gorgeous and glowing, that’s you!

Stay cool all summer long

Don’t forget to drink lots of liquids, to replenish the fluids you lose through sweating. Keep a water bottle with you at all times to avoid getting dehydrated. Refresh yourself with chilled watermelon, or make a smoothie with summer fruits like peaches, strawberries and melons blended with ice and fruit juice or milk. What a fantastic way to stay cool, re-hydrate your body, and get skin-nourishing vitamins at the same time!
